Instructor directions are listed below

  1. Explain to students that there are many forms of communication. Ask if they can provide an example of a form of communication.
    • People communicate by talking (in person or on the phone) or writing (in a letter, an email, a text message, etc.).
    • Devices communicate through a physical connection (e.g., a USB cable, or by touching devices together) or through a wireless connection (e.g., via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular data service such as 4G).
  2. Further explain that Bluetooth is a form of communication that requires two devices to be near each other to communicate (e.g., Bluetooth smartwatches, headphones, or speakers).  Wi-Fi allows users within its access point to connect to the internet or communicate with other devices connected to the internet, regardless of their location. 4G cellular data service allows users to access the internet at a greater distance from the cell tower.
  3. Ask students if they have any devices that use Bluetooth. Have them provide examples of how they use the Bluetooth and if there are any limitations of its use.
  4. Explain, for this activity, you will be using Bluetooth communication to send information from the phone/tablet (using an app you will create on App Inventor) to the Bluetooth module which you will connect to the Arduino. You will also write code for the Arduino to perform actions based on the information received via Bluetooth from the app.

At the Thinkabit Lab, we use this time to help students understand the different forms of communication and why they are useful. We have an open discussion allowing students to drive the conversation with any questions they have about different forms of communication.

You could also discuss other forms of communication such as radio, infrared, or any other example you or the students have. If students ask questions about communication that you are not prepared to answer, explore the internet for explanations with your students and use it as an opportunity for everyone to grow in their knowledge and understanding.
